The Customary System
The customary system is used in the United States. The
attributes for the customary system are length, weight, and
capacity.
The part in red is where the customary system is used. The gray is where the metric is
used.
Units of Measure and Conversions
The highlighted words are the units of measure for
each attribute.
Length :
1
foot
= 12
inches
1
mile
= 5,280 feet
1 mile= 1,760
yards
1 mile= 63,360 inches
1 yard= 36 inches
1 yard= 3 feet
Weight:
1
pound
= 16
ounces
1
ton
= 2,000 pounds
Capacity:
1
cup
= 8
fluid ounces
1
quart
= 4 cups
1 quart= 2
pints
1 quart= 32 fluid ounces
1 pint= 2 cups
1 pint= 16 fluid ounces
1
gallon
= 4 quarts
1 gallon= 128 fluid ounces
1 gallon= 8 pints
1 gallon= 16 cups
To do Conversions:
To do conversions in the customary system, you will have
to multiply to make a larger unit smaller. Divide if you want to
make a smaller unit larger.
The Metric System
The metric system is used in all other places besides the United States.
You can measure weight, length, and capacity in the metric system, too.
Units of Measure and Conversions
Length:
1
kilometer
= 1,000
meters
1 meter= 100
centimeters
1 centimeter= 10
millimeters
Weight:
1
kilogram
= 1,000
gram
s
1 gram= 100
centigram
1 centigram= 10
milligrams
Capacity:
1
kiloliter
= 1,000
liters
1 liter= 100
centiliter
1 centiliter= 10
milliliter
To do Conversions:
If you want to make a bigger unit smaller,
multiply
by
ten. To make a smaller unit bigger,
divide
by ten. This is
only for the metric system.
Personal References
Here are some personal references for the customary
system:
This spray bottle is about 1 foot
or 12 inches.
The tip of the pointer finger
to the first joint is about 1 inch.
A car usually weighs about
1 ton.
This mug can hold about a cup of liquid.
